Collecting images
My practice requires a large stock of images, all the same size and shape, providing a rich source of pixels. I have taken photographs for most of my life, although sadly most of the early ones are not of high enough quality. To provide the level of detail I want, they have to be shot in RAW and at least 3000 pixels square, taken with a good lens. (I use the Canon EOS system). I personally photographed all of these images: they are parts of my life and of my memories.
Paradoxically, the strong clear recognisable image is not always the best. As I’ve said elsehere in this blog., dull images sometimes produce the most dramatic colours. For example, I have lots of shots of mud in the river Thames. To me the Thames is the symbolic heart of Richmond, and it amazes and pleases me to reveal its hidden colours. The Thames has been abused by those of us who live on its banks for a thousand years, and I like my images to restore it to something of its glory.
